I examined Mr. E. Jones here on May the 9th with a view to considering his fitness for temporary service in the Harbour Department of Hong Kong.

He informed me that he was 58 years of age and that he had done 30 years' service in Hong Kong, retiring in July 1915 on pension. It would appear that apart from frequent "bowel" trouble he enjoyed fairly good health throughout the whole of that period. In May 1916 he joined the staff of the Hersey Docks & Harbour Board. He was anxious, on account of his health, to obtain work out of doors but the work set him in the Dock Board was entirely indoor and was not suitable for him, so much so that in January 1917 he felt seriously "run down". His main symptoms at this period were,
(a)
(b)
Continued pain between the shoulders. Mental depression.
(c)
Continued Diarrhoea.
His doctor, Dr. Leask, advised him to see Dr. John Hay of Liverpool who examined him as recently as February last.
So far as I could ascertain Dr. John Hay attributed his physical state to Toxaemia.

On my examination of him Mr. Jones presents an exceedingly anaemic appearance, and his appearance also suggests recent loss of weight. There exists a very marked state of Bronchial Catarrh in his lungs; his heart is dilated; his liver and spleen are normal Bo far as I could ascertain by clinical examination. There is left inguinal hernia for which his doctor ordered a truss four months ago. Both legs are oedematous - a condition which has existed for the last two months, is disappearing, and is now - es I find it of a slight degree.
My examination disclosed no other clinical condition bearing on his fitness.

I would state that Mr. Jones has felt the Winter severely; he has invariably enjoyed better health in Hong Kong than in England. It was his intention to leave this Locality and to live in a Southern district solely on account of his health.
